Born on June 12, 2009, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Maaya’s tryst with tennis started at the age of eight. Initially introduced to the sport as an after-school activity, it didn’t take long for her parents to realize that she had an exceptional talent. By ten, Maaya was training rigorously under top coaches and showing remarkable promise on the national circuit.

At just 13, Maaya made a mark in ITF junior tournaments, securing key wins and breaking into the top 60 junior players globally. Her tenacity and skill led to an invitation to participate in an Under-14 event at the Australian Open in 2023, marking her arrival on the international stage.

Maaya’s true breakthrough came in February 2025 at the L&T Mumbai Open. Entering as a qualifying wild card, she stunned the tennis world by defeating higher-ranked players such as Iryna Shymanovich, Zarina Diyas, and Mei Yamaguchi. Reaching the semifinals, she became the youngest player born in 2009 to achieve such a feat in a WTA 125 event. Though she lost to fifth-seed Jil Teichmann, her remarkable performance cemented her reputation as India’s rising tennis star.

Recognizing her potential, the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain invited Maaya for advanced training. Under the mentorship of world-class coaches and the occasional guidance of Rafael Nadal himself, she has been refining her game, preparing for the challenges of professional tennis.
